Hoplophobia Defined
(July 16 2009) Recent rights victories in the Senate have caught the attention of the hoplophobes and they’re not happy. I received the following "URGENT ACTION ALERT" from the inappropriately named "Freedom States Alliance" this afternoon and I couldn’t think of a better way to explain the level of irrationality and ignorance which defines hoplophobia than to do exactly as they asked and pass the "Alert" on just as they wrote it (typos and all.) While I sometimes complain about the over-hyping and exaggeration engaged in by some of our brethren in the rights movement, our guys can’t hold a candle to the outrageous fear-mongering of these hoplophobes.
Be sure to contact your Senators and Harry Reid and tell them not to surrender to irrational fears. You might also consider making a donation to The Firearms Coalition to help us counter this nonsense. — JAK

Tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) To Oppose National Hidden Handgun Law!
The gun lobby is attempting to force our communities to permit untrained and dangerous individuals from other states to carry loaded, hidden handguns in public.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can stop the gun lobby’s extremist agenda. That’s why we need you to call Sen. Reid’s office RIGHT NOW to tell him to stop the gun lobby’s national hidden handgun law, S. 845, the "Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2009."
1) Call Sen. Reid’s DC office at (202) 224-3542; and send him email here. If the gun lobby gets its way in Congress, the following scenarios might become all too real:
* You’re visiting an elderly family member at the hospital when you see a gruff man in the waiting room adjusting his loaded and deadly handgun in his belt. You inform the nurse that there is a dangerous and armed man next to sick and dying people and the nurse informs you that it is "legal" for the gun owner to carry a concealed weapon and the hospital can’t stop it.
* You’re walking through the park with your kids on a sunny day eating ice cream when you see two men pull up in a dark SUV. As you walk by, you see them take two handguns out of the glove box and stick them in their jackets. You immediately call 9-1-1 to inform the police that there are armed men in a park with families and children, but the police tell you that unless their is cause, the armed men are perfectly legal carrying deadly weapons in family-friendly locations.
* You’re visiting a garage sale in your neighborhood looking for used furniture when a man is talking to the homeowner about wanting to sell his Glock 9mm handgun. He boasts that he’s a concealed weapons permit holder from out of state, and looking to sell his firearm for some gas money. He says he has a selection of other handguns for a sale at a great price. You leave and bump into a police officer on the corner who tells you that although the man at the garage sale might be a gun trafficker, there is no way for law enforcement to stop it, or have the resources to investigate.
This is the gun lobby’s dangerous worldview where ordinary families have to live in fear of heavily armed individuals who arrogantly and selfishly claim they have the "right" to carry hidden and loaded guns anywhere and anytime, even though their extremist ideology puts Americans are greater risk.
The gun lobby’s dangerous legislation, S. 845, would require states to accept concealed carry permits that are issued by other states. The practical effect of this change would be reducing concealed carry permit regulations to the lowest common denominator. This is particularly dangerous as many states have weak carry laws and issue individuals permits after only a simple computerized background check-through a database that is missing millions of disqualifying criminal and mental health records.
2) Also, please call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202)224-3121 and ask to speak to your Senators. Tell them to vote NO on S. 845, whether it is offered as a stand-alone bill or an amendment to another bill. If you do not know who your Senators are, click here.
The threat is real and the National Rifle Association will stop at nothing after recently passing legislation to allow concealed handguns in National Parks.
The U.S. Senate could vote on S. 845 at any time. We need your help NOW to convince Senate Majority Leader Reid and our U.S. Senators to stand up and say "NO" to the gun lobby. And "NO" to more concealed handguns in our communities.
Thank you for taking action on this urgent issue.
Sincerely,
Freedom States Alliance
