Tombstone, Arizona – Finally back home in Arizona from the Winter NRA Board Meeting in Northern Virginia.

I stayed for a few days after the meeting to pay my respects to my friend Phil Schrier, who passed away just before the meeting.

Phil was the NRA’s Director of Museums. He had a wealth of knowledge about the history of firearms, especially certain critical periods in which firearms were used extensively, and technology advanced. He and my father loved to debate the details of the first and second battles of Manassas (what the Yankees called Bull Run), while Phil and I shared a love of old west lore about cowboys and gunfighters. Tombstone, Arizona – The National Rifle Association announced yesterday that it has filed suit against the NRA Foundation, claiming that the Foundation has been exploiting the NRA’s trademarks and intellectual property and misleading donors by raising funds under the NRA’s name, while refusing to fund NRA programs.

As a member of the NRA’s Board of Directors, I have long been aware of the problems and discussions of various strategies to try to get the Foundation’s leadership to fulfill their obligations to the NRA, including the possibility of a civil suit, so I was not taken completely by surprise by today’s announcement. Tombstone, Arizona – The charging system of AR-style firearms is awkward and slow.

That’s just a fact.

With a lot of practice, a shooter can get pretty handy at loading and making ready, clearing malfunctions, and accomplishing reloads – even when the bolt hold-open doesn’t work as it should – but it’s awkward. You have to dismount the rifle, often all the way down to the butt, sitting on your hip or thigh, in order to get the needed angle and leverage. Tombstone, Arizona – You’ve probably already seen reports that Doug Hamlin, the National Rifle Association’s Executive Vice President (CEO), has announced some significant changes that will impact every NRA member.

As a member of the NRA Board of Directors, I’d like to share my perspective on the changes.

Tombstone, Arizona –  The candidate list for the 2026 NRA Board of Directors election has been released, and people are already asking me for recommendations, even though voting doesn’t start until early next year.

I’m not ready to offer recommendations, but I do want to encourage everyone interested to start looking at the candidates and deciding who they want to support. Tombstone, Arizona – Just over a year ago, the National Rifle Association won a stunning victory at the Supreme Court in NRA v. Vullo, et al.

The question in that case was whether it violated the NRA’s First Amendment rights for a New York State regulator to intentionally and openly use her regulatory authority to threaten and coerce insurance companies into refusing to do business with the NRA—solely because of the Association’s advocacy for Second Amendment rights.
